The Points of Life

In the beginning there is an ovum and a spermatozoon, each bearing twenty-three chromosomes. Once the two are joined, the corpus is capable of reproducing itself – twinning – and has a metabolic capacity. The corpus can respond to external stimuli long before it may be considered sentient, before it has brain waves so very much like those of an adult.
In the end there are billions of cells that one by one or many by many become incapable of reproduction or metabolism. The corpus can respond to external stimuli only until its lowest brain functions are lost, long after it may be considered sentient.
The endpoints of life are rife with mystery for most, and I would posit that the mystery stems from our own ineptitude in defining the terms; he who defines the terms wins the argument.
