On a Random Wednesday

Flash stories are a great mode of journaling for me.

On a Random Wednesday

The door bell rang, and I rushed to open it ahead of the littles running with plastic swords taller than their bodies; the ladies Bible class sent a heart-covered bag with odds and ends and goodies inside like lotion and chocolate and note cards and fruit, but even more, I had a genuine adult with which to share a conversation, at least until the timer sang, calling me to my muffins.

I had dressed in a simple tank top and soft cotton pants, and I wore a full apron of a delicate strawberry print. My hair was pulled back in a ponytail as I chatted with my mom on the phone and told her I’d finally become a real mom: I was baking with my littles and dunking Trefoils in hot tea while wearing an apron and feeling very much fitted into a role of confidence and calm.

During nap time – yes, the three boys ages 6, 4, and 2 still nap daily for all our sakes – the door bell rang again, and I cringed because oh how I loathe nap/work time interruptions, but my cringe melted into smiles at the delivery of a purple vase filled with flowers of orange and green and violet. Both my sister and I received flowers from our parents on this random Wednesday, unearned, unwarranted, unbidden, which is wholly their style of love.

To add a cherry to the top of the day, I finished a brief writing project that made me panic every time I thought about it since I was asked to do it, and all parties received it generously and gently, permitting me a pretty sleep on a random Wednesday.
