Happey Mathers Day

Oh, Eldest, my love! You brought me motherhood and continue to teach it to me every single day. Let me be your student.

Happey Mathers Day

Friday afternoon, Eldest – six years old – refused me permission to touch his backpack; and so I promised to leave it be. By Saturday, the contents were burning a hole through his mind, and it became increasingly clear that gifts would not wait for Sunday to arrive.

He placed the awkward package in my blind hands; I opened my eyes to the light beaming from his center. The wrappings were made of butcher paper that had been colored and written upon and folded at acute angles to cover the gift-ridden middle.

I tugged on the tape-addled paper and set free his creation. After hugs and celebration – and other gifts – Eldest held his wrapping paper under his chin and flashed his perfect smile toward the camera, but the spelling told the story of one boy’s work to honor his mother while asking nothing in return.
